Why meters are more important than grams
Running meters (or yardage) is a term that describes how many meters of thread are in a skein of a certain weight. This is the only reliable way to compare yarn across brands and qualities. A 50-gram skein of mohair has significantly more meters than a 50-gram skein of tightly spun cotton.
When a pattern says you need 400 grams of yarn, it actually means that you need a specific length of thread. If your alternative yarn is heavier or lighter per meter, 400 grams will be either far too much or far too little.
