Privacy Policy
Last Updated: September 11, 2026
1. Introduction
Your privacy is important to us at Knittingtips.net. This privacy policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your personal data when you visit our website.
2. What Information We Collect
Knittingtips.net is primarily an information portal. We do not collect personal data such as name or email address unless you actively provide it to us — in practice, by filling in the contact form or emailing us. Data submitted through the contact form is processed by Netlify Forms on our behalf and is used only to answer you.
However, we collect anonymized information about how the website is used to improve our services. This includes:
- Aggregated statistics on visitor numbers and popular pages.
- Technical information such as browser type and device type.
3. Legal Basis for Processing
Our use of analytics and advertising cookies is based on your consent, in accordance with Article 6(1)(a) of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Consent is given or declined via the cookie banner shown on your first visit, and can be withdrawn at any time, see section 4. Strictly necessary technical cookies (e.g., to remember your consent choice) are processed on the basis of our legitimate interest in operating the website, in accordance with Article 6(1)(f).
4. Cookies and Analytics Tools
We use cookies and analytics tools to:
- Remember your preferences (e.g., whether you have accepted the cookie banner).
- Analyze traffic on our website to improve the user experience. For this, we use the following third-party tools:
Google Analytics 4
We use Google Analytics 4 to see how the site is used: which pages get visited, and which calculators get used. To protect your privacy we use "Consent Mode v2", which means no tracking cookies are placed before you have explicitly given your consent. We never send along what you type into a calculator or write in the knitting journal — the event records which tool was used, not the numbers you used it on. Note, however, that Google Analytics itself ties the visit to an anonymous client ID and an approximate location derived from your IP address.
Ahrefs Web Analytics
We also use Ahrefs Web Analytics to count page views for our search analysis. It sets no cookies, but it does receive your IP address when it loads, so it is loaded only after you have consented — the same as Google Analytics.
Google AdSense and Advertising
Knittingtips.net does not currently serve ads — our sister site, Strikketips.no, does. We plan to enable Google AdSense on this domain once it has been approved by Google. When that happens, third-party vendors, including Google, will use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this or other websites, in the same way described in Strikketips.no's privacy policy, and this section will be updated accordingly. If you visit Strikketips.no, you may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings, or opt out of a third-party vendor's use of cookies for personalized advertising by visiting www.aboutads.info.
You can choose to turn off cookies in your browser, and you can withdraw your consent at any time via our cookie settings. Be aware that restricting cookies may affect the functionality of the website.
5. International Data Transfers
Google, which provides the analytics and advertising tools we use (Google Analytics 4 and, in the future, Google AdSense), may process data on servers outside the EU/EEA, including in the United States. Google LLC is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, which the European Commission has assessed as providing an adequate level of protection for such transfers. You can find more information in Google's own privacy policy.
6. Your Rights (GDPR)
Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), you have the right to:
- Access the information we have about you.
- Correction of incomplete or inaccurate data.
- Deletion of your data.
- Restriction of processing.
- Data portability, i.e., receiving your data in a structured format.
- Objecting to processing based on legitimate interest.
- Lodging a complaint with a data protection authority, see the contact details in section 9.
We keep no database of visitors, so for most of these rights we have nothing to disclose or delete. The exception is anything you have sent us yourself: the name, email address and message from the contact form are stored with Netlify Forms until we delete them. Write to the address in section 9 and we will retrieve or delete them.
7. Data Retention
We do not ourselves store personal data beyond what is necessary for the analytics purposes described above, and we do not maintain our own database of visitor data. Google Analytics 4 automatically deletes user data in accordance with Google's default retention settings. Data you store in your browser via localStorage (see section 10) is kept until you delete it yourself or clear your browser's storage.
Messages from the contact form remain in Netlify Forms until we delete them manually. We delete them once the enquiry has been dealt with, and in any case no later than twelve months after we received it.
8. Changes to the Policy
We may update this privacy policy as needed. The latest version will always be available on this page.
9. Data Controller and Contact

10. Local Storage (localStorage)
Our calculators and knitting diary store data directly in your browser via localStorage. This data:
- Is stored only on your own device
- Is never sent to our server or third parties
- Is not accessible to us or others
- Can be deleted at any time by clearing the browser's data
Examples: project names, yarn types, needle sizes, calculator settings.
