A yardage calculator is an essential tool when planning yarn requirements or performing a yarn substitution. Many knitters focus exclusively on weight (grams/ounces), but it is actually the length of the thread that determines whether you will have enough for the project.
Imagine you need 400 grams of yarn with a yarn length of 150 meters per 50 grams. If you substitute this with a yarn that only has 120 meters per 50 grams, you will run out of yarn even if you buy the same total weight. The yardage calculator ensures you have enough thread regardless of yarn density or skein size.
How to calculate yarn requirements manually
If you want to understand the math behind yarn calculations, the formula is relatively straightforward. Here is how to do it:
Formula for calculating total length
Total length = (Total weight in grams ÷ Weight per skein) × Length per skein
Example calculation
Suppose your pattern specifies 400 grams of yarn, and your chosen yarn has 175 meters per 50 gram skein:
- Calculate number of skeins: 400g ÷ 50g = 8 skeins
- Calculate total meters: 8 skeins × 175 meters = 1,400 meters
We recommend adding a 10% yarn safety margin to account for swatching, gauge differences, seams, and optional length adjustments. Always round up to the next full skein!

- Lace: 400–800 meters (440–875 yards)
- Fingering / Sock: 175–225 meters (190–245 yards)
- Sport: 125–175 meters (135–190 yards)
- DK / Light Worsted: 100–130 meters (110–140 yards)
- Worsted / Aran: 75–100 meters (80–110 yards)
- Bulky / Chunky: 50–75 meters (55–80 yards)
- Super Bulky: under 50 meters (< 55 yards)
Why is yardage/length more important than weight when buying yarn?
Different fiber types weigh differently even when the yarn thickness is identical. For instance, alpaca and cotton are denser than pure wool. If you only look at grams or ounces, you may end up with too little yarn. Yardage guarantees the exact linear amount needed for your project.
What is the standard weight of a yarn skein?
Most yarn skeins weigh either 50 grams (1.75 oz) or 100 grams (3.5 oz). Lace weight or mohair can come in 25g balls, while large hanks may be 200g or more. Always check the ball band.
